THIS MONTH’S COMMENTARY – BE THEIR VOICE – THANK YOU PAUL ZAMORA - RIP
This month’s commentary is dedicated to our friend - friend to all - Paul Zamora. Paul passed away June 2nd after a long
battle with cancer. We met Paul in late 2002 when he became a deputy coroner for Carbon County WY (Rawlins) and
Dean was in training as a deputy coroner in Larimer County CO. Together we learned – and taught each other – for the
next nearly 20 years as close friends. Paul would become the elected Coroner about 16 years ago, and from 2010 to this
year regularly invited us to several of his annual state coroner training conferences to present death investigations from
a non-law enforcement perspective. Paul transitioned the Carbon County Coroner’s Office being run from a funeral
home to a forensic facility – dedicated in his honor on his last day, April 30, 2021 – the Paul A. Zamora Forensic Center.

SCENE INSPECTIONS AND DOCUMENTATION, AND DNA COLLECTION
In civil and criminal litigation, the parties have a legal right – and by some statutes an obligation – to have an
independent inspection and documentation of the evidence. This includes trace evidence, scenes, vehicles, clothing,
instruments used, etc. This also includes collecting and preserving DNA evidence from these inspections.

Our agency is experienced and equipped to travel to any location in Colorado, contiguous states, and nationwide to
inspect evidence in your case, document with photography and video, and collect and securely preserve DNA.

        CASE STUDIES FROM AFI-LLC
Over $1 Million in Life Insurance Benefits - Denied and Won on Appeal - No Decedent Negligence!
The decedent was found at home after having bled to death from a hand injury. The claim was denied based on the
insurance company review of only the autopsy report, and making a determination the decedent was negligent due to
alcohol intoxication. The findings from the forensic autopsy were originally Suicide and Cause of Death due to stab /
incised wounds of the right hand, and intoxicated. What happened?

Unusual Rural Gunshot Death - Homicide or Suicide?
The circumstances themselves were unusual – alone in his truck, in a very remote area, and only a rifle found by the
responding deputy – in the backseat and muzzle towards the decedent in the driver’s seat. The rifle was sitting on top of
a pile of personal effects, and the entire truck – including truck bed – was filled with belongings, except for the driver’s
seat where the decedent was. He had a gunshot wound to the left chest – at an angle not consistent with the trajectory
of the rifle. The responding deputy concluded the decedent shot himself while driving his truck, he went off the road
and hit a utility pole, causing the rifle to go over the decedent and to the back seat. What happened?
