CHAPTER TEN
A FEW months later, in March, 1982, A.T. stopped therapy. She didn’t like feeling vulnerable, especially since she was so successful in life in general. Besides, she was now six months pregnant with her first child and wanted to prepare herself for childbirth without having to struggle with therapy.
Eleven months later she returned to therapy, happy with the birth of a lovely son, but having trouble deciding how to split her time between career and child. As before, we met for one 45-minute session weekly. The psychological and spiritual themes described in Chapter 8 reappeared. Then, during a session in June, an unusual reaction occurred.
In preceding chapters I have presented ideas about a mortal fear that I think profoundly affects everything we do in and out of therapy. Some people may question the validity of such a fear, hidden from consciousness yet profoundly constricting awareness and hiding us from spiritual reality. The following reaction seems to me to bring this fear into vivid focus and to be strong confirmation of its existence.
