seems to me as though it’s less what actually happened than being in the right place at the right time. It was like a state of grace. You can’t go around asking for faith or religious experiences or anything like that; it just descends upon you.
S: Do you consider that grace? Do you consider that that was a religious experience?
A: I don’t know what it was.
S: Do you feel frightened by it now, or do you feel glad that it happened?
A: We-e-e-e-1-1-1-1 (laughter) Glad? Um, I don’t mind it so much. What I fear is that it will just sort of evaporate and . . .
S: Would you like it not to evaporate?
A: Yes. I feel that having gone through it, I’d like it to go somewhere. But I think that it’s going to require some patience on my part and trying to keep it in my mind—to really try and be aware. I don’t know how to do this, it’s all kind of new to me.
S: Let’s talk about this next time if you’d like. Right now time is up and we’ll have to stop.
A: Okay.
UPDATE-JULY 26, 1984
Shortly after her profound experience of terror, A.T. had a remarkable dream. It represented to me a moving example of what Jung called the emerging central archetype (see Appendix II)— deepening spiritual awareness manifesting in the form of a special geometric figure, a mandala.
The Dream: Playing a captivating melody on the piano, A.T. suddenly recognized that she was not playing notes on a sheet of paper. Instead, settled gently on the stand in front of her was a lovely four-petalled flower. At one with the reality of this delicate flower, actually experiencing herself fully merged with its petals, she was able to transform its inner message into music.
Although yogis describe the heart chakra as having twelve petals (see Appendix III), the petals are divided into four quadrants, and so this chakra has been described by some clairvoyants as being a four- petalled lotus. Could this dream represent her conscious awareness awakening more deeply to the love in her heart? The theme was strikingly similar to that of the dream she’d had about Sai Baba earlier in therapy.
