Guest speaker: Collin Jarvis, VP, Stealth Belt Inc. Guest Speaker:
Collin shared his personal journey from ulcerative colitis diagnosis at age 20 to ileostomy 7 months later. That aggressive progression dashed Olympic dreams for this varsity track star and captain of his Track and Field and Long-Distance Running teams at University of California at Berkeley. But Collin took heart from a quote from his college prof Dan Mulhern: “Only challenge produces opportunity for greatness.” He resolved to see his ostomy as such a challenge and changed his dreams. He kept running, helping to push boundaries for ostomates, and teamed up to start a business helping people facing serious medical challenges to pursue a healthy lifestyle. They then partnered with Tennessee-based Stealth Belt to help it expand.
Collin showed us how Stealth Belts support, conceal and protect ostomies with comfort and style. They’re made of a flexible anti-microbial fabric (like Spandex) that applies gentle pressure, helping support the weight of your bag while helping your appliance adhere to the skin. The belts are custom- tailored to fit you and your appliance whether for one or 2 stomas, plus can provide targeted support for hernias. They are multi-layered with a hole for the flange and a bottom-zippered pouch. Stealth Belts can be worn all day and are available in black plus a range of colours and prints (which take a little longer to produce).
