What manufacturer does the best flange for convexity?
} It really depends on what you need personally and the type of stoma you have. CeraPlus offers more convexity in a soft convex flange. Convatec also offers good convex flanges.
My peristomal hernia has had a positive effect in pushing my stoma forward, but the stoma is still retracting and leaking even with a convex flange and paste.
} You could try a plain adapter with an Eakin barrier, or try Marlen—it offers a different shaped convex flange, like a bowl.
My ostomate wears an Eakin wax barrier that melts with wear. When she tries to remove the wax gathered at the bottom of the flange, she often tears the skin. As a caregiver, what do I do to prevent skin breakdown?
} Take the wax ring off for a change to let the hydrocolloids in the flange help the skin heal. Or switch to strip paste for a while.
When speaking to a nurse about skin break down, she recommended Cavalon spray, but I understand it doesn’t work with CeraPlus. What to do?
} We’ve been trying to train all health professionals to realize that they don’t go together. Skin barriers like Cavalon are pure silicone so they won’t stick to the skin or flange and can cause more leaks.
When you have an area at the perimeter of the stoma that is wet, do you apply powder?
} Yes.
Are hospitals still performing ostomy surgeries?
} Yes. The majority of ostomy surgeries (about 85%) are for cancer so they are still going ahead. OASC has new brochures that we will get to you shortly.
} If you’re having any trouble getting brochures into RVH, you can contact Dr. Colin Ward or Dr. Bharat Sharma, a colorectal surgeon in Barrie who would be happy to have them in their offices.
That was a good article in the latest OASC newsletter about C-Difficile and how you can get that from taking antibiotics. Can Jen comment on that. I had a cousin with it. My doctor told me if you’re going to be on antibiotics, take a probiotic at least an hour or two before or after you take the antibiotic. Plus going forward, it’s actually smart to always take a probiotic at least once a day.
