On Your Own
Pretend that you are Aswad’s parent and your classmates are your children. You teach the children what to do if they get
lost again. Tell them the following steps before leaving to get help if they are separated from their adults.
1. Stop.
2. Stay where you are or go to the nearest place that is safe. If you are in the middle of the street, go to the sidewalk
and stand tall and strong there.
3. Look around for your adults.
4. If you cannot see the adults came with, then yell out the name you use to call them (give an example: call your dad’s
or your mum’s name).
5. If it doesn’t work or if it is not safe staying where you are, try to get help.
6. If you don’t know what else to do, ask a woman with children for help.
7. If there is no woman with children, look for either a woman or a man who seems calm and respectful. Ask for help
but also be clear that you want to stay in the store or the place where you are. Ask other adults for help if the one
you chose first is not listening.
Memorise the steps and perform in front of the class. You may use your own words.
Task 4 Based on the story in Task 3, put the places
or locations that Aswad and his family
visited chronologically. Start from London
Heathrow where they landed.

Make a conversation with your partner using the scenario below.
Based on the story ‘The Day I Got Lost’, pretend you are Aswad. You are in Harrods
and separated from your family. You meet the security guard and tell him that you
are lost. Ask him what you should do. The security guard helps you to find your
family.
