Double Up With Laughter

In 1991, I went to Europe with my father and two sisters. We were driving in eastern Germany and found ourselves in
a very small town--really just a crossroads--and unsure which way to go. In a scene like a stereotypical cold war movie,
people in this tiny burg began warily peering out of their windows, peeking through curtains, shutters and blinds, to
see why this car would be stopped in their little hamlet. We were definitely objects of curiosity.
My dad was bent over the map trying to decide where to turn. One by one, people began emerging from their
homes and approaching the car. Pretty soon, about 10 people surrounded the car, all offering friendly advice on how
to get to where we wanted to go.
We have a hilarious photo commemorating the incident--my dad looking at us with a very amused expression
while his helpers surround him and wave their arms in excitement. Bless them, they got us on our way.

Expressions of Asking for and Giving Directions

Asking for directions means to ask someone to tell you the way to a place. Giving directions is instructions that you
give to someone about how to find a particular place. It is important to know how to ask for and give directions to
get to a destination: city, street, etc.
