We do not use the word may in a polite question when you is the subject.
Example:
1. May you please close the door?
2. Could you please close the door?
The word please makes the request more polite and less direct.
Possible answers to the modal request are:
Positive Informally Negative
Yes. Sure. No.
Yes, certainly. Okay. Sorry.
Certainly. Uh-huh. (means yes) No, I’m sorry. I can’t.
Yes, of course. Sorry, I can’t. I’m busy now.
Of course. I’d like to, but I can’t.
I’d be happy to. I’d love to, but I’m busy right now.
I’d be glad to.
