of obscure and ancient chefs. He was, however, an extremely good, though rather messy cook; especially when motivated by his own pangs of hunger.
The news about the Green Mountain development didn’t come as a surprise to Angie. She too had heard it on the radio. She had been worrying all day about how they could keep Magic when the new suburb was built.
‘We don’t even own a car. I can’t drive you to your horse and back each day.’
‘Tom could take me on one of his bikes.’
‘You know they don’t even work most of the time, and how about carrying a saddle and feed?'
‘Why don’t we keep Magic in the backyard? There’s plenty of room,’ asked Charles.
Saffron looked hopeful but Angie squashed the idea, replying, ‘No, I’m afraid we can’t. The neighbours would complain, the council would come down on us like a tonne of bricks and I wouldn’t feel safe with you riding through the traffic all the time.’
Saffron could feel a knot of panic building up inside her. She had always depended on her mother to fix things, now she could feel it wasn't going to happen.
'Why can't I?' she squeaked. 'If only you trusted ...'
'Now, don't you start carrying on!' snapped Angie. 'I've been on the phone all morning trying to organise professionals in the building industry into a lobby group. We want the council to cancel their approval. They've just got to be sensible.
