He attended the big school at the other end of the street. As well as his part time job at the fast food store, he had founded a Death Metal band called Chuckie Chunder and the Cheeseburgers with two of his new school friends.
‘Hi Ronnie!’ said Chuckie as they screeched to a halt by the front door. ‘How’s things?’
‘Just terrible!’ snapped Saffron, running past him into the house. ’Where’s Angie? I need her help!’
Their mother came out of her office to greet them as they entered the house. ‘Slow down, love, come and tell me all about it,’ murmured Angie as she grasped Saffron protectively around the shoulders and propelled her to the nearest chair.
They sat down at the kitchen table, which still held the uncleared remains of breakfast and she listened to the tale of Saffron’s day.
Angie was an architect and the breadwinner of the family but her designs were so radical that she rarely got the big commissions which her brilliance deserved. Tom, the
father of Saffron and Charles, was felt tobemoreofapetbytherestofthe
family than a fully functioning human. He spent most of his time either restoring his
old British motorbikes
or translating from French, the recipes
