The kids didn’t really understand that. He explained that there had been a lot of shonky development around their
town recently. Why had the council allowed it?
‘When they built the last suburb they drained a swamp and destroyed the habitat of a rare species of frog,’ he said. ‘Before
that they allowed a suburb
to be built directly under the flight-path, so that people have to listen to the roar of planes all day.’
‘Isn’t there some way we can stop that
sort of thing happening?’ asked Saffron.
With a worried frown he replied, ‘I got together with my friends and we tried to fight it but the developer has too much money and influence. Those councillors need to be reminded that it is the ordinary people in this town who elect them.’
Saffron had the idea that Mr Worragul was not as conservative as teachers are supposed to be. It felt good that, perhaps, there were some understanding adults who would support her. If only she could work out how to start her fight.
School finally ended and Saffron hurried home to change her clothes before going to ride Magic. The thought that this might soon all end and she would lose her beloved pony brought all her misery back. What hope was there for a bunch of kids to stop the developers when adults could not manage it?
She almost collided with her brother on the doorstep.
