‘And now for a different kind of community effort. I learnt this dance from my mother when I was very young. I hope you enjoy it as much as I always have!’
Linda got them all to form sets of four in an outer and inner circle. She bullied, cajoled and instructed the whole room into getting the movements right, even the trendy teenagers who thought that they were way too cool for that sort of thing.
‘Nothing’s happening here! How about we join in?’ cried Ashley. Saffron had the sense to stuff the old jewellery box full of their nights' takings into her bag. She slung it over her shoulder before she was dragged into the dance by her three friends.
Each foursome went spinning around in a circle, first one way and then the other. Over a hundred pairs of hands reached out - shake, shake, shake, clap, clap, clap - the hall resounded with noise and movement as they spun around and around. Archways were made and pairs ducked through to form new foursomes and repeat the whole process. Saffron and Abigail found themselves partnered by seniors twice their height - they had to reach up to hold their hands.
It was totally ridiculous, whoever heard of a Slavic Wedding Dance performed at a school-dance by a heavy-metal band? Saffron’s pale curls were flying out behind her and she was starting to run short of breath when the stamping, clapping and shrieks of laughter turned to utter chaos and shrieks of genuine panic.
