Sweat and perfume mingled. The group of dancers in front of the stage were all trying to jump higher than each other, some were sitting on each others’ shoulders. Sequins and bling flashed in the shifting light. The beat grew stronger, the screams and shouts grew louder.
There was a big group of teenagers, dancing on the top of stacked up seats at the side of the hall. Ashley squealed as the stack lurched under the weight of all the bodies. A teacher noticed and rushed over to order them all off. It was getting so hot that some people went out past the girls to sit on the hall steps, in the cool night air. Hardly any new people were coming into the hall and the girls started to feel left out.
Through the wide-open doors strutted the weirdest sight. ‘Excuse me, have you paid your entry? It’s for a good cause!’ called Ashley, as a boy seemed about to walk straight past the table. At that, he paused momentarily ... swivelled, and spat on the ground before going on his way.
‘Urggh, yuck!’ blurted out Claire.
‘What a sick, twisted, monkey!’ growled Ashley.
‘Too right!’ agreed Saffron. ‘He does look like a monkey and
he’s totally sick. Did you see what he was wearing? A beanie, a baseball cap, and all that tacky jewellery.’
‘That stupid gold chain and medallion ...’
‘The gold earring and the gold bracelets ...’
‘Yes, I noticed, a total bling overload, but he’s got a face full of
pimples and a mouthful of braces, hardly a cool look, is it?’
