She put single posters on light-poles and long lines of them along the hoardings outside construction sites.
She knew that it might be illegal, but it wasn’t hurting anyone either. It could save the lives of her friends at Green Mountain. She noticed, though, that they carefully avoided the police station. Tom might be a ratbag, but he wasn’t thick.
They were almost through the pile of posters when a pale orange glow appeared along the horizon of the hills to the east of the town. It blended into a sky of pale turquoise, but over to the west she could make out the bulk of Green Mountain, shrouded in gloom, still with a few stars or planets gleaming in the darkness.
A boy with a bundle of newspapers ran past her as she glued the last four posters up. He wished her a cheery good morning and went on his way. Soon the bike was roaring up their driveway and into the garage.
Both of them cleaned up in the laundry, stripping off their gloves and outer clothes, which were covered with sticky goo.
‘Yuck,’ exclaimed Saffron in disgust. ‘What exactly is this stuff?’
‘Wallpaper glue. Just perfect! Cheap, washes off, but boy does it stick!’
‘So what did you mean back there by saying you’re a professional?’
‘Well I am, it’s how I made money when I was at Uni. Early morning raids through the city.
