The cops were always trying to catch us, but our team was the best.’
‘But who paid you for doing that?’
‘Lots of people - music venues, promoters, rad-parties, unions - but lots of it we just did for fun. D’you ever hear about B.U.G.G.A-U.P? No? Well, I s’pose you’re way-too-young. Back in those days the advertisers put all sorts of crass things on huge billboards ‘round the city - things like cigarettes, racist and sexist stuff. We changed it, see, we added things, mostly funny things, but things to make people think.’
Saffron was seeing a new side to her father and wasn’t sure how to react, so she asked for practical details.
‘Oh, yeah, we did real extreme stuff, like climbing poles, or breaking into buildings and abseiling off them. It was fun at the time, but I was too angry. I went too far. Don’t ever let your anger take over, chicken, no matter how bad things seem, or you’ll only hurt yourself.’
‘How did you manage to do Uni. at the same time. It must have been hard! I know Angie got her degree, but what did you study?’
Suddenly, the questions that Saffron had never been brave enough to ask, had never cared enough to ask, were coming out. She knew her father was sensitive, had secrets. Now, the strange battle she was engaged in seemed to be pulling her closer to her family as well.
‘You wouldn’t see me as a spoilt, snobby, little rich-kid from a private school, would you?’ he asked.
