Saffron took his advice. She’d just finished drying her hair under the hand-dryer when the other kids got to
school. Her hair was still a mess, but that was normal.
At roll-call, lots of kids were talking about tomorrow’s demo. Almost everyone had seen the posters and lots of them said they’d be there. Their sleepy, old town didn’t usually see such excitement.
Saffron’s friends thought she was being pretty boring. Fancy being in on all the planning and not wanting to talk. ‘C’mon, Ronnie, spill the beans! Gimme the low-down! Blab it out!’ they demanded.
‘I’m not trying to be boring, I just don’t know. The adults have taken over. I can’t even work out what I’m supposed to be doing and I’m so tired.’ She proved her point by falling asleep during double maths. Her teacher, a crusty, self-important geek, was not amused.
After school, she walked to the paddock to see Magic. The horrid billboard still upset her, but there were no vehicles and no surveyors. Perhaps, she thought, Jimmy has thought of some other urgent job for them. He might have hidden all their equipment, or let down their tyres. She gave up thinking of reasons. Maybe they had just knocked off work early.
There was no one else around and she felt too sleepy to ride. She gave Magic some apples and went in search of Mobo. Saffron trudged right to the top of Rocky Knoll, but the bird was nowhere to be seen.
