That was a let-down because she was having difficulty planning her next moves, during and after the demo. She needed his advice. He was a such clever bird and was so often right.
Quite a few of the trees on Rocky Knoll had ribbons of fluorescent plastic tied around them, including the huge, dead, gum tree where Mobo had said his nest was. Maybe the ribbons marked the trees to be cut down! Saffron ran around in a panic, calling frantically for Mobo, but there was still no sign of him. As she left the knoll, she angrily ripped the ribbons off the trees and watched them float away on the breeze.
In the paddock she came across some short, wooden stakes with more fluoro-ribbon tied to them. I'll do anything to fight this, she decided, as she kicked at the pegs till they were loose. She yanked them out and hurled them as far as she could.
She kept worrying about what would happen the next day. She wouldn’t get a chance to come to Green Mountain before everyone met at the town hall. Perhaps Mobo was too busy with his family to respond to her. She filled up the dish under the eaves with Kitten Snacks; even if they were too hard for the chicks to eat, they might make life easier for the adult birds.
Dinner was simple that night, just soup and sandwiches. Perhaps Tom is tired too, thought Saffron. Her parents had been on the phone most of the night and now had disappeared into the study together. Charles was still out in the garage making music with his friends. She curled up with her kitten and was soon fast asleep.
