Abigail called to her, ‘Hey Ronnie! Come and look at my new mobile phone.’
An angry Saffron shouted back at her: ‘No! I won’t, I’m sick of mobiles - they’re expensive and useless. Why don’t you talk to people instead of machines?’
These were almost the same words that Angie, her mother had used when Saffron had begged her for a mobile phone. She didn’t mean to be rude to Abigail who was the only close friend she had made since moving, but she felt jealous and left out. The kids would only have to take one look at her swollen red- rimmed eyes to know she’d been crying.
The bell rang for class. Saffron threw her bag under the desk and took out her diary. If she pretended to read perhaps no one would talk to her, but the words just blurred on the page.
