‘Saffron - are you with us today?’ asked the teacher with a gentle smile.
‘Uh, mm,’ mumbled Saffron, ‘Oh, yes, Ms Honey,’ as she realised that she had failed to respond to roll call and blushed to the roots of her pale, tangled hair.
‘Let me remind you class - mobile phones are officially banned at this school.’ There was a rustle and shuffle of bags under desks as the teacher said this.
Oh well, at least if my mother won’t let me have one I can’t get it confiscated, thought Saffron.
Maths and science were followed by a history lesson. During this she actually started to wake up and pull herself together because the teacher was talking about things that could be useful. Some man called Mahatma Gandhi who was a resistance leader in India nearly a hundred years ago. He became famous for the way he organised protests - to get the English to go home and give his country independence. Instead of fighting he staged sit-ins and hunger strikes. It worked really well, passive resistance, the teacher called it.
It reminded Saffron about her own problems and gave her a glimmer of hope. She had heard on the radio that morning about the council giving the go-ahead to plans for the building of a new suburb at Green Mountain.
That was where she kept her pony.
Magic had only been hers for a month and Saffron just adored her;
