the cutest jet-black mare she had ever seen, complete with a neat, white blaze and one white sock. Riding lessons in the big city had been fun, but this was the first time she had ever owned her own pony.
Moving town and changing school was such a drag. She had left all her friends behind in The Big Smoke. It was cleaner and nicer here and owning Magic made up for everything - but she missed her city friends. She wanted at least to be able to ring them up.
This morning, at breakfast, she had sparked a massive family row by a poorly timed request for a mobile phone.
‘... but Muuuum!’ she cried, ‘Chuckie’s got one and you don’t whinge about him using it too often!’
‘That’s because he needs a phone to let us know when to meet him after work. You know he pays his own bills with what he earns on the weekends at Chicken King.’
‘I know. It’s really gross, chopping up dead chickens and frying them in fat - but I’m not old enough to do that. I need a phone, I need to talk to my friends. Oh why can’t you understand!’
Escaping to her bedroom she had slammed the door and turned up the radio to block out her family for a while. Then had come the worst blow of all, as she listened to the radio news and realised that she might lose her pony. Saffron ran out of the house in a panic, not even telling her family the dreadful news.
