School seemed different, somehow. Saffron didn’t feel like a new kid anymore. A lot of people said hello to her. Even the teachers seemed more friendly.
‘I used to think about our old life in the city all the time. I only wanted to be with the friends I grew up with. That’s changed now. I love it here, and I just adore Magic - she’s my pony,’ she said to Claire as they had lunch together under a tree.
Claire, in return, told Saffron about her cousins who lived on a farm and owned horses. ‘I’m not that good with horses, but I go to visit the rellies most holidays. Always do a bit of riding ... mostly ... like, falling off! Their horses are all so big and hot- tempered.’
‘That sounds scary! I never knew you rode. Would you like to come out to Green Mountain with me some afternoon? Magic would look after you, she’s such a kind pony.’
‘Thanks! That’d be great,’ answered Claire excitedly. Saffron really enjoyed Claire’s calm, good sense. Claire saw herself as a boring dag. She was amazed that a girl as cool as Saffron could be bothered with her. So their assignation at the horse paddock was made.
That was not the only assignation Saffron made that week. On Friday night when her family were sitting around eating their T.V. dinners, the phone rang. Chuckie answered it and then called out to Saffron, with a snide tone to his voice.
‘Little sis-ter! Someone here wants to talk to you!’
