Jane and Ken were staring at her with odd expressions on their faces. 'You ... know him, do you?’ the girl asked.
Saffron shrugged dismissively. ‘A bit, we’ve ridden together.’
‘He’s the best rider in the club! He's been to seven state events and he’s only fourteen! His parents take him out on the show circuit and he does open jumping. I think he’s the best in the whole zone!’
Saffron shrugged again. ‘Well? ... He’s a nice bloke and that’s all that really matters. I just love Boofhead, though.' She looked at the eager, sycophantic girl and thought, why don't you get a life? But she didn’t say it out loud.
Mitch was right, she did enjoy the sporting. Magic accelerated as though she was turbo-charged, then cornered like a Porsche. She not only had the fastest times in her own age-group, but beat most of the seniors as well. Tom had been roped-in as one of the timekeepers and got thoroughly involved.
‘She’s as good as my Vincent!’ he said, and from him that was high praise indeed.
At lunch time, Mitch introduced her to all his favourite people, both equine and human. Her father was being the life- of-the-party in the canteen, so she and Mitch lay on the grass and talked of everything but horses.
The jumping was not quite as successful as the sporting. Magic showed a little more enthusiasm than accuracy. She
was good enough to be put in the second grade up, but, as a team, they would have to put in a lot more practice.
