‘Take a look at how this petition is set out. They’re documents with a legal status. Petitions need to follow the correct format, or they’re worthless. This one was partly filled in but never sent. Everyone has to print their name and address, then each signature goes straight after it.’
‘Why does it all have to be so complicated?’
‘They need to be able to check up on whether they’re real people, on the electoral roll, not fake names that someone just used to fill up the page,’ Mr Worragul replied.
Eventually they got the petition properly laid out. They decided to print two different versions - one had Children’s Petition to Preserve Green Mountain written at the top, the other was just for adults to fill in. Mr Worragul printed off fifteen copies of each type. He wrote his own name, address and signature on the top of the first sheet.
‘Now you are supposed to fill in the whole sheet, so try and do each sheet, one at a time. I’m sure this will be enough, you’ll need hundreds of signatures to fill this lot up. Good luck girls, it’s a very worthwhile job you’re doing.’
They started on their classmates and teachers that very afternoon. Both of their teachers signed and so did eighteen of the twenty five kids they asked. This is just easy-peasy, thought Saffron, we’ll have them full in no time at all. I’ll go round every street in the town if I have to. I’ll do anything to save Mobo and Magic.
