It took an hour and a half to door-knock about thirty houses and she only had twelve new names on the petition. She then had to explain to her mother why she was so late home.
‘It’s all very well in concept, but you don’t look as though you’ve had much fun. I really don’t want to restrict your movements ... but ...’
‘I can look after myself you know, I’m way better at fighting than Chuckie.’
‘Yes, I’m quite aware of that,’ said her mother with a half smile, ‘but what I do want to know is where you are, just in case something goes wrong. I at least need to know your plans. If you insist on door knocking you can get a friend to go with you and do it on the weekend.’
‘Yes, I s’pose I could, but I don’t know if it’s the best way to get support anyway. It sort of feels rude - like invading someone's privacy,’ Saffron admitted grudgingly.
‘You could always set up a table somewhere busy and friendly - then people would only have to talk to you if they were interested.’ suggested Angie.
‘You mean like the shopping mall? I’ve seen people with petitions down there.’
‘Yes, any place with plenty of people. Here - give me that petition of yours!’ She filled in her details and signed it with a flourish. ‘It’s well laid out - did someone help you with this?’
‘Yes, my art teacher at school.’
‘Oh, Frank Worragul? I’ve met him, he’s a really together guy ...
