The pony was feeling fresh after her two day break, but Saffron was a game and experienced rider. A playful horse was no worry to her, it just added a bit of spice. She sat relaxed on her pony’s back with her feet, still in their school runners, thrust firmly forward.
No matter how poor their family had been in the big city, her parents had never let Saffron miss her weekend riding lesson - or let her brother go without his weekly guitar lesson, so both kids were really good at doing the things they liked best. Having parents who were self-employed was not always fun. No regular income meant no regular holidays and when they went to the Supermarket they mostly bought things on special. Saffron didn’t let it worry her - except occasionally, when it meant she couldn’t keep up with her friends.
Now that she had met Mobo she didn’t care about not being able to afford a mobile phone. Perhaps he would let her make some more calls today. She had her address book in her pocket, with the numbers of her city friends. It had been great talking to Rowan, now she wanted to talk to all the others.
She rode towards Rocky Knoll in the hope of seeing the little bird. She and Magic picked their way up the hill slowly. She didn’t usually ride on such rough ground, there was a danger of Magic going lame on the stones. When they reached the ferny hollow that was her secret hideaway she dismounted and let the pony graze. The grass was long and lush because the horses hardly ever came up this way to eat it.
