Formal Leave-taking

When we are in a formal situation, such as during a meeting, presentation, etc. We can

                 use formal leave-taking.

To make it easier for you to understand formal expressions of leave-taking and also the
response, see the table 1.3 below!

                     FORMAL LEAVE- RESPONSES MEANING
                           TAKING

It was a pleasure seeing It was great seeing you too. Senang melihat anda.
                  you.

It was nice to meet you. Nice to meet you too. Senang bertemu dengan
                                                                            anda.
                                                                            Semoga harimu

Have a nice day! Have a nice day too! menyenangkan.

                  Goodbye. Goodbye. Selamat tinggal.

Table 1.3 Formal leave-taking and responses

There is no specific rule that the response for each formal expression of leave-taking must
match the response described in the table. For example, you could reply "Goodbye" if
someone said the phrase "nice to meet you" and this would be normal too. But it's best to

avoid saying "Goodbye" in the leave-taking procedure even in a formal situation, because

it seems stiff and as if we will never meet again.

                                 Glimpse of Information

Each country has its own way of expressing greetings. One

of them that is quite famous is the greeting from Japan. If in
Indonesia we say greetings for leave-taking by shaking

hands. Meanwhile, shaking hands in Japan is impolite, so

they convey greetings by bowing their bodies, or what is
                                               known as Ojigi.
