Ken Anderson in our NY office represents some of the world’s most innovative and successful recording artists and songwriters, including The Beastie Boys, Ben Folds, The Dixie Chicks, Mindless Self Indulgence, Magnetic Fields and others.
Our music practice also got a boost recently with the addition of Daniel Matusov, who joined us from Warner Music Group.
Recent music-related engagements include:
• Successfully represented client Beastie Boys in an action against TufAmerica, Inc., regarding the alleged use of samples in Beastie Boys Albums. This is a cutting edge case involving sampling and the use of musical compositions and sound recordings and on March 24, 2015, a judge granted summary judgment because TufAmerica had never acquired an exclusive license to the copyrighted material at issue and the plaintiff lacked standing.
• Represented Diego Torres in his new record deal with Sony Music US Latin. Diego, a singer, songwriter, and actor from Argentina who sold more than 23 million albums throughout his career, left Universal Music after six years and inked a new deal with his former record label, Sony Music. Diego will be inducted into the Latin Songwriters Hall Of Fame next October. Sheppard Mullin successfully negotiated the complex and challenging agreement with Sony Music promptly, bringing Diego back to what he called his home.
• Represented DigiTour, producer of live events featuring social media stars, in connection with licensing, sponsorship, talent and touring agreements with respect to DigiTour and DigiFest events.
