Martial Arts Etiquette

By honoring USA Karate etiquette, students soon develop a sincere
respect for their school, their fellow classmates and their instructors.
Martial Arts training develops self control and discipline.

         • All students and Instructors at the level of Brown Belt and above should be
addressed by their last name. This traditional sign of respect is in recognition of the

student’s dedication and accomplishments in the Martial Arts. Black Belts at and

above the level of 5th degree should be addressed as Master.

         • When a student enters or leaves a classroom, he or she should stop at the door

and execute the traditional bow. Bowing at the entry of the classroom is USA

Karate’s traditional sign of greeting and respect for what is being learned, for your

fellow classmates, for the art of Karate, and for the school.

         • Students should line up in belt order at attention, until the class begins.

         • While the Instructor is speaking, students should be in Charyut (Attention) or Chun
-bi (Ready) with eyes on Instructor.

         • Students should listen, not speak, when the Instructor is speaking.
         • When addressed by an Instructor or a Black Belt, students should respond with the

appropriate answer followed by “sir” or “ma’am”.

         • Gum and candy are not permitted in the classroom.

         • Please do not disrupt classes. Speak quietly while around the classroom.

         • Students should wear a clean uniform when attending every class.

         • T-shirts under the uniform top must be tucked into pants.

         • Since students are often paired up with classmates for stretching and self-defense

drills, good personal hygiene and cleanliness are required.

         • Profanity is not allowed in the school.

         • If a student arrives late, they should quietly wait to be acknowledged by the

Instructor prior to entering the class. This is a traditional courtesy.

         • All safety equipment must be in good condition with no tape on exterior.
