How Well Do You Know Your Iowa Historic Buildings?
A This author and her family left their little house on the prairie near Walnut Grove, MN in 1876 when she was nine years old. They traveled to Burr Oak, Iowa to help manage this hotel. This is her only childhood home that remains on its original site.
B This traveling preacher settled in Lewis, Iowa in the mid-1850s. From this log cabin, he supported the Underground Railroad, providing shelter to fugitive slaves heading north. His Iowa home stands as a testament to his role in the anti-slavery movement and his involvement in the Underground Railroad.
C The Iowa Constitution was crafted in this building. After ten years, it became the first permanent University of Iowa building and housed most of the university from 1857 to 1863. It remains a focal point of the university, serving over time as a library, chapel, and armory, and providing space for classrooms and offices.
D This famous Council Bluff resident built this 14-room, 3-story Victorian home in 1869 on a high terrace overlooking the Missouri Valley. Associated with many influential Americans, he was a Civil War general, and was involved in politics, finance, and military affairs. He was also a businessman, a member of Congress, and a renowned railroad builder.
E This little white house with a large rounded window became the backdrop for a famous painting when the artist toured Eldon, Iowa in 1930. The windows, usually associated with church architecture, may have been purchased through the Sears and Roebuck catalog.
F Today the seven villages of these Colonies, founded in 1855 with religious faith and community spirit, represents an American dream come true. This structure was built in 1858 and is a prominent historic landmark in the village.
G Overlooking downtown Des Moines, Iowa, this building was con- structed in 1869 by Benjamin Franklin Allen, Iowa’s first millionaire. It has been the Iowa Governor’s Mansion since 1976. The building, with its steeply pitched roof and long narrow windows, offers a commanding view of the city.
H This president, the first born west of the Mississippi River, was orphaned at age nine, leaving his West Branch, Iowa birthplace and this small two-room cottage. His Presidential Library and Museum opened at this location on his 88th birthday, August 10, 1962.
I The King’s House in Salisbury, England was the inspiration for this Tudor mansion in Des Moines, Iowa. Built by cosmetic magnate
Carl Weeks between 1923 and 1928, it contains 42 rooms.
J Born Marion Robert Morrison in Winterset, Iowa on May 26, 1907, this iconic Western & War movie film star nicknamed himself after his childhood pet Airedale dog named “Duke.” He was born in this modest four-room home which sits adjacent to a museum housing the largest collection of this actor’s memorabilia.
K This 26-acre park-like estate located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa is the site of a Queen Anne-style mansion, various gardens, a pond, an or- chard, and woodland. The house was built between 1884 and 1886 by Caroline Sinclair, widow of pioneer industrialist T.M. Sinclair. Today, it tells the story of the three families who lived there and their daily lives.
L This building sits atop a hill in Des Moines, Iowa and offers a panoramic view of the city’s downtown. Its commanding feature is the central towering dome constructed of iron and brick and covered with thin sheets of 23-carat gold. It is primarily used as the house of the legislative branch of Iowa government, but it also functions as a living museum and a state and international cultural facility.
