Oh, The Places We Will Go!

“Reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay
where we are.” Well, Mason Cooley certainly got that
right. The American college professor (1927-2002) was
known for his witty aphorisms. “The time I kill is killing me”
is another favorite of mine. That’s why I’m 100 percent
certain his “bubble” would have had shelves brimming with
books to make the most out of this very long quarantine.

I know I have. I’ve ticked off dozens of great titles this
year—including most of the Library’s top 20 books for 2020
(see page 14). You probably have, too. After all, books are
one of the things that have brought us together. But it’s the community we have
built around them that has kept us together. And for me—and many others—that’s
why social distancing has been the hardest part of all.

Yet, for almost a year, we’ve found ways to stay connected. And we hope that
our first issue of this new digital magazine, Cover to Cover, will be another way to
share news about people, programming, online resources and future plans—which
include our 30th Anniversary on South Street celebration in October. (We’ll start
with the reasoning behind our new name on the next page!)

This is YOUR Library. We’d love to hear from you. Your suggestions and ideas are
             always welcome.

For now, stay safe, keep smiling and find adventure cover to cover! As Mason
Cooley would say, “While we are reading, we are all Don Quixote.”
