PROGRAM NOTES

is the Polish word for cattle).
Maurice Ravel’s orchestration is famous for its colorful effects (piccolo chicks,
dark winds for Orthodox chant), memorable solo writing (the trumpet-led
promenade), and masterful dramatic sweep. When commissioning Ravel,
Serge Koussevitsky stipulated that he would be the only conductor allowed
to conduct it for several years. He arranged with the publishers of the
original piano suite to publish this version himself, which in turn led to many
other versions for orchestra composed while he held the rights to Ravel’s
        groundbreaking, unforgettable work.
