“What’s Eating You 2?” Mothmageddon
Rebecca Bennett, the collections conservator for English Heritage in London says, “We conservators are calm people and not easily riled but they’re really annoying because the damage they can do is so great. If you were to leave a rampant moth infestation it’s very similar to a flood or fire in the damage they could cause.”2
Your home insurance policy won’t cover moth damage
Here’s the thing: the damage they do is not covered by most home insurance policies (except one or two companies like LV Insurance). Even companies that profess to offer this kind of coverage don’t make it visible on their websites. So, unless you’ve done a lot of research and found one of the few insurance companies who agree to cover you against this particular home invader, the damage to your carpets, clothes, furnishings and food will have to be written off. That means, once this insatiable invader has visited your house and destroyed your things, you’ll have to write off the investment you made in those treasured belongings.
Make no mistake: these home invaders will return again and again if they can. Just as people who’ve been burgled find their homes repeatedly targeted by thieves, these home invaders will make repeated attempts to get into your home.
And the more expensive your belongings, the more at risk they are because they have a taste for luxury items. But even if your tastes run more to Primark than Gucci, you’re still not safe. They’ll take what’s on offer and munch through it.
