Update from your Local County Councillor Cathal Rasmussen
November 2018
Over the last few weeks the county council roads section have been busy around the town re-
pairing some of the worst sections in and around the town. There are still sections that require
immediate work and hopefully some more of these will be completed shortly.
The lower harbour drainage scheme is still scheduled to
come to Cobh in the middle of 2019. While this is good
news for the town a large section from the end of Bal-
lynoe all the way to Bevelly will not be included in the
scheme. I have been raising the issue at the highest level
possible in Irish Water and talks are ongoing to try and
get this section included in the scheme.
How can we spend millions improving our harbour only
to allow a large area to continue to pollute the harbour
.The official response is that it is not financially viable to
include this section in the overall scheme. At the same
time the issue of rust in the mains water at Belvelly goes on. Again I have been talking with
Irish Water to resolve the issue and while some works are ongoing the ultimate solution to the
problem may be to run a new water main into Belvelly. At present this has not been agreed
and the residents have to make do with water from tankers which is completely unacceptable.
Once the drainage scheme is completed there are plans to do a new street scape in Cobh.
At present the initial plan is ready to be discussed at Municipal Council level and once this
is completed the plan will go out for public consultation for an 8 week period. It is vital the
members of the public view the plans and offer comment. A series of information days will be
planned where members of the public can meet the planners to help understand the proposed
changes planned for our town. Further information will be available shortly.
The proposal for the new pedestrian crossing between Colaiste Muire and Scoil Iosaef Naofa
was considered at our recent Municipal meeting. The council engineers have recommended
that one of the proposed build out areas be removed from the scheme completely and that
other ones will be reduced in size to facilitate parking. Once the crossing goes ahead it will
make the road hopefully a lot safer for all concerned. At our recent meeting I raised the issue
of other locations in the town having some form of pedestrian crossings and the engineers are
looking into a number of areas that may be suitable
.
The issue of dumping rubbish was highlighted recently at a meeting with local business people
from Harbour Row. We are committed to working together with the business people and resi-
dents in dealing with this scourge. A plan was agreed at this meeting and hopefully this will
improve the situation over the coming weeks.
I raised the state of many walls around the island with the local engineers at our recent coun-
cil meeting. Last year the council staff worked on sections of the walls at the back of the Island
and I am hopeful that more work will begin shortly on other stretches as many of them are in
a terrible condition and require urgent work.
