Cobh Tourism recently installed an Automated Emergency Defibrillator (AED) in an old style
telephone box in Cobh Town Centre. It is available 24/7 in a highly visible location and the
door access code is available by contacting Cobh Garda Station.
Speaking about Cobh Tourism’s latest project chairperson Fionnghuala Smith commented, “As
a tourist townCobh needs to be a welcoming and safe place to visit. However a 24 hour access
AED is also of huge benefit and comfort to the people of Cobh.”
The old style telephone box is located outside AIB and was funded by Cork County Council
and Cobh Tourism. It was installed by John Reilly and Toddy Stafford. Old telephone boxes are
iconic symbols and through initiatives like Heart of Killarney have come to be regarded as life
saving locations. Their visibility makes them ideal places to keep defibrillators that can be ac-
cessed by the public at any time of the day and night.
The defibrillator and heated cabinet in which it is stored was generously donated by Ryan’s Bar
and their customers. Their generosity may be a life saving contribution to the people of Cobh
and the many visitors to our town for years to come.
