COBH WANDERERS CLINCH 2ND DIVISION TITLE IN YOUGHAL. 18-4-15
On a beautiful but very breezy day Cobh Wanderers Senior squad clinched the 2nd Division
title with a comfortable victory over Youghal United last Saturday. Wanderers started the
game brightly and were dominating from the off with some fine football being played by the
team in particular with Mikey O’Shea and Shane Geasley pulling the strings in midfield allow-
ing Chubbs and Conor Meade and Davin O’Neill to dazzle their opponents it would be only be
a matter of time before the first goal arrived.
This duly arrived when Chubbs chipped an unbelievable ball which was brilliantly pushed on
the post by the Youghal keeper for the in rushing Davin O’Neill to sweetly finish to the net
to make it 1-0 in the 16th minute. Wanderers were well on top for this period and increased
their lead in the 25th min when once again Chubbs picked up a ball in midfield and sent a
rasping shot which rattled off the post and out to Conor Meade who swept the ball home to
make it 2-0. Once again Chubbs, who was seeing an awful lot of ball was expertly found by
Geasley, then released Davin O’Neill in on goal to sweetly finish to the top corner to make it
3-0 in the 27th minute. Wanderers were so much on top at this stage that it looked like they
would score every time they went forward and were totally dominant with Youghal only scrap-
ping for possession here and there. Another great move in the 35th minute with a Peter Nolan
throw in to Conor Meade who struck first time on the run only for the ball to dip off the top of
the bar from a full 45 yards out from goal with the keeper well beaten. Goal number 4 duly
arrived in the 41st minute when Mikey O’Shea broke from midfield to release O’Neill in on the
right; he expertly crossed to the far post for Chubbs to finish to the net.
The score line remained at 4 nil at half time, Shane Geasley and Eoin Hasting’s were replaced
by Shane Barrett and Tony O’Donovan at the break, Wanderers were expected to dominate
the second period as was the case with the first half, but they seemed to switch off com-
pletely for the first 10 minutes of the half and were duly punished by a young and tenacious
Youghal outfit who now had gained a foothold and were making a game of it when in the
53rd minute a great ball over the top to the right winger who swiftly crossed into the box and
was finished to the net by an inrushing Youghal forward with Wanderers defence motionless
to make the score line 4-1. This should have served a wakeup call for the visitors but rather
than give the required jolt it seemed to have the opposite effect where once again Youghal
who now had the lion’s share of possession broke once again on the right side and a replica
cross was clinically finished to make the score line 4-2 possible game on!!
