Cobh Wanderers 2-1 Midleton.

Wanderers returned to the top of the table on goal
difference with a gutsy team performance against lo-
cal rivals Midleton on Tuesday. Wanderers conceded a
soft early goal and this seemed to unsteady the team
who had to deal with the loss of Fitzy in defence and
Cian O’ Connor up front for this crucial game. Wander-
ers had the ball in the back of the net twice during the
first half but were unfortunate to see the flag raised
for offside each time. Midleton looked the more settled
side in general play during the first half and Wander-
ers needed to defend strongly to prevent conceding a
second. Wanderers came out determined at the start of
the second half and were soon awarded a somewhat harsh penalty.

Przemyslaw Weiss picked out the run of George Keating and his surge into the box
forced the ball off the hands of the defender. Jason Abbott stepped up to slot home
from the spot.Tony Flanagan has to replace the injured Eoin Hastings with 20 min-
utes remaining and put in a great shift making some crucial tackles and clearances
to stop the Midleton attacks. What turned out to be the winner came in the 79th
minute when Abbott fed Tarrant-Lowry down the left and his low ball into the box
was neatly back-flicked into the bottom corner of the goal by Dave Stack.

It’s probably unfair to pick out individuals from what was a super team effort on
the night but the work rate and determination of Kyle Downing and George Keating
were key to this performance along with the safe hands of Mark Power in goal and
the ball distribution from Jason Abbott in the middle of the park.

There were a lot of tired but satisfied bodies in the home dressing room after the
game...well done to everyone involved. Some of these players will have to pick
themselves up for a meeting with Avondale United in Old Church Park tomorrow
evening (Thursday 25th) at 6.45 in the O’ Connell cup Q/F before a meeting with
the same opposition in the League away on Sunday morning....a tough schedule for
the boys...please continue to support them for the remainder of the season as so
many did last night....it is greatly appreciated.
