Over 2k raised from Trevor’s Berlin Marathon journey

Heading to the German capital on the back of eleven
months of consistent training gave Cobh athlete Trevor
Cummins every chance of once again improving on a mar-
athon best that stood at 2hrs 48mins before last months
    visit to Berlin.

Having recording new personal bests over 5k, 10k, 10miles
and half marathon distances since the start of the year,
three weeks high altitude training in the Swiss Alps was
the final stage of preperations for what would be Trevor’s
    fourth marathon.
Settling into a nice early rhythym helped the Ballymore
Cobh man work his way into the race steadily. Quickly gathering pace as he moved
through the 42.2km event, Trevor concluded with a second half nearly three min-
utes faster than the first, allowing him to storm through the iconic Brandenberg
Gate before hitting the line in 2hrs 38mins 23secs.
Speaking afterwards, Trevor expressed his gratitude for all the support and best
wishes that had been sent his way in the build up.
“It’s really nice to have so many people supporting your efforts especially on the oc-
casions when you are training and competing away from home. That connection to
your home place and the people that are rooting for you can count for an awful lot
when you need something extra to help push you through the testing moments.”

Using the marathon campaign as a means of raising funds for The Mercy Hopsi-
tal Foundation (Cancer Appeal) has enabled over €2,000 to be donated so far to a
cause close to Trevor’s family, with his late father-in-law, Phil Collins, having re-
ceived care in the Cork City based hopsital during his cancer treatment.

“After raising just over €1,700 last year, we hoped that we might get over the
€2,000 mark this time and we are already past that point with donations still being
received through the online campaign. Once again, the support of local people and
businesses has been incredible. As a family, and also on behalf of the charity, we
can only thank people for being so generous and supportive of a cause that every
family in Ireland can relate to.”
