Wanderers take second spot with narrow win over UCC
Result: U.C.C. 0-1 Cobh Wanderers
The seniors grabbed a huge win before the Christmas break with a late Cian O’ Connor strike
that saw us take all three points from an in-form U.C.C. outfit. Wanderer’s first chance came
after 5 minutes when Stack whipped a cross in from the left to the head of O’ Connor but his
fine effort went wide of the near post. On 25 minutes Hastings threaded a super ball through
to Keating who managed to lift his shot over the keeper and crossbar from a very good posi-
tion. Brendan Keating made the best of a number of excellent saves in the first half on 39
minutes when he dived full length to his right to tip the ball round the post after seeing it late
through a crowd of players.
Keating was called on again, in the third minute of first-half injury time, to brilliantly block
from a point blank left foot strike. Wanderers played with a strong breeze at their backs in the
second half and attempted to make the most of it at times. Eoin Hastings made a super burst
through the middle after 63 minutes and pulled the ball back from the end line but the move
amounted to nothing when it deserved better. On 75 minutes Wanderers found themselves
under pressure at the back but when Wolfe, who again had a superb game, was unfortunate
to slip in the box it was Fitzy who came to the rescue with a crunching tackle that left the UCC
player on the deck.
With ten minutes to go it looked like UCC were about to take the lead when their player wound
up for a shot just inside the box but a fantastic block from Hastings saved the day and allowed
Wanderers to go for a win. The winner came in the final minute of normal time with one of
those long kicks from Power picking out the run of O’ Connor who was well inside his own half
when the ball was kicked. O’ Connor took on the defender and cut in from the right before
deciding to hit for goal and beat the keeper on his near post. The keeper did get a hand to it
but the power took it to the net. A great performance by all the lads today and big congrats to
Stephen Quinlan and John Meade who led the team magnificently on the day.

Cobh Animation Team News
We were delighted to be invited to 10am mass this morning in St Colman’s Cathedral for Irish
UN peacekeepers, O.N.E., MPAI, Congo Personnel. Organised by Congo Vet Frank O’Brien it
was a beautiful mass with full colours present along with representatives from the Armed
Forces, Cobh Tourism, Cobh & Harbour Chamber and relatives of deceased Vets (one who died
57 years ago today).
A very evocative Last Post was also played. The names of all Irish Armed Forces who have
died serving with the UN were also read out and remembered with sadness and pride. It was
very special for our team members present with Barry, Marian and Teresa having brothers that
served in the Congo and other team members having family that served in the Irish Army/
Navy.
