Update from your local Councillor Cathal Rasmussen Jan 2019
At last Irish Water have announced that they will begin laying the new water main on Tic
knock Hill in early May. This is something I have been working on for the last 18 months and
the regular bursting of the pipe caused much disruption
to many people over the last few years. The resurfac-
ing of the hill will take place as part of the Council road
maintenance programme which will be made public
shortly.
The other positive news in that work has commenced
and is well advanced on the design of the new water
main serving the Belvelly area. I am in weekly contact
with Irish Water and once the design is finished the
contractor will be ready to start as they have a contrac-
tor engaged already. They are also working to remove
the do not use notice but they are committed to having
the work of laying the new main completed in 2019. The whole issue of the sewerage problem
which I raised is a difficult one to resolve but we are working to see how this can be achieved.
The gate has now been installed at the steps at the five foot way instead of the railing. The
lights were recently connected at the entrance to the Cathedral car park and even though
I had the money allocated last year it took months due to a technical delay to have them
switched on. I am also pleased that after a few years of negotiation work has begun on re-
pairing the wall on the road near the old Rinn Ronan and this will improve the safety of this
stretch of road. Work is due to begin on the pedestrian crossing between the schools over the
coming weeks as well.
Over recent weeks I noticed that there were many street lights out of action .I took note of
approx. 20 of these and I recently reported them to Airtricity with the location and pole num-
ber. Please report faulty lights to Airtricity on 1850372772 or log onto their website to report
them. Failing that please contact me and I will report them.
Irish Water are due to meet with us Councillors in February to give us an update on the
planned works which are due to begin in May. I also had 2 motions in recently inviting the
Port of Cork and providers of Broadband in Cobh to a council meeting to discuss the Marino
Point plan and also the lack of broadband in the town. We are hoping to schedule these meet-
ings in either February or March. The issue of Litter in Cobh continues to be a huge problem
for us all .As your Councillor I keep raising the issue and I am working like so many to find
a solution. There is no one single solution to the matter but we must all work together to
prevent litter being dropped around our town. Also the issue of Dog Fouling continues to be
another major problem for the town. I am again appealing to dog owners to ensure that they
clean up after their dogs and please keep them under control. Many dog owners of course are
excellent in cleaning up but it would appear as if it there are some regular owners who don’t
care about the rest of us.
Another major concern to many of our residents is the speed people are driving around the
town. I am asking people to please slow down all around Cobh and be mindful of pedestrians
at all times. Finally the closing date for applications for the local Municipal grants is Feb 15
at 4.00pm so all groups and associations wishing to apply can do so by logging onto www.
