4. Tell them how to begin the course. Make sure they each
have a copy of the course map, and explain the options
and constraints. Make sure everyone understands any
symbols or conventions you have used in drawing the
map, and make sure they understand what to do as soon
as you end the orientation session.
5. As soon as the orientation session is over, wander around
from student to student and remind them again where
and how to begin. This may be the first time they have
been given an opportunity to have anything to say about
their own learning, so give them time to adjust. It may
take up to a day or two to get into the flow of things, after
which there will be no stopping them.
6. Follow the course procedures.
7. When a participant has accomplished all the objectives,
provide a certificate of achievement (which actually
means they have achieved, not just that they showed up),
and ask the participant to complete a short question-
naire intended to identify opportunities for course
improvement.
