TUSCANY
The region of Florence, long noted as the source of Chianti in straw-based flasks, has rapidly evolved into Italy’s leading provider
of modern red wines, as well as the symbolic region as a whole of Italy. Chianti, produced in 8 sub-districts centered around the
hills of Florence and Sienna, remains the most voluminous of Italy’s classified wines and the leading expression of the native
Sangiovese grape. What has come to be called the modern renaissance in Tuscan wine began in Chianti in the 1970s, and spread
through the central zones of Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Carmignano, Pomino, Vernaccia di San
Gimignano. Progress has been most prominent alon the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea, in Bolgheri, Val di Cornia, and Suvereto, as
well as in the coastal hills of the Maremma to the south.
Interestingly enough, the largest Brunello producer is American-owned and the largest Chianti producer is publicly held, causing
many to wonder who stole the soul?
