NAPA COUNTY
The Napa Valley is one of the worlds great wine regions. Fifty miles north of San Francisco and thirty-six miles inland from the
Pacific Ocean, Napa Valley sits snug between the Mayacamas and Vaca mountains ranges. The valley runs north to south and is
thirty miles long and just five miles wide. Napa became California’s first AVA in 1981. While Napa total wine production may
seem like a lot, the valley only produces 4% of California’s total wine and just 0.04% of wine globally. Roughly one sixth the size
of Bordeaux, the valley contains sixteen AVAs within it. Each AVA is has its own unique micro-climate that express different char-
acteristics of the varietals grown. Cabernet Sauvignon is king but Merlot, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are all
grown in addition to many other varietals. The influence of San Pablo Bay is instrumental in creating the cooler climate in the
southern reaches of the valley where temperatures can fluctuate by as much as 15°degrees from the northern end of the valley.
