The Workscheme Wars
In 2021 the students took
on an incredibly impressive
task – writing, producing,
directing, scoring and acting
in the College play (while
in a pandemic, no less!).
The Workscheme Wars was
produced and directed by
students Acacia Nettleton
and Lexie Jaensch, assisted by
Annabelle Love and Megan
Barry. Music Director was
Sasha Levine.
For the benefit of readers who
may not be familiar with the
term, ‘workscheme’ at JCH is a system whereby students give
back to the College (and reduce their fees) by doing chores
such as collecting dishes from kitchenettes, serving food,
washing dishes, and cleaning. The General Representative is
an elected member of the student club executive who liaises
with the kitchen and draws up rosters for the workscheme.
Set in the indeterminate future, the play follows what
happens in the wake of the shock death of the General
Representative – the workscheme duties are unrostered,
the dirty dishes are stacking up and the College is in chaos
as floor factions emerge.
Acacia Nettleton came up with the original concept for the
play and later praised the scores of JCHers who worked with
her to make it a marvellous reality: ‘You’ve kept me laughing
and awestruck with all you’ve come up with – hilarious
scripts, beautiful works of music, ingenious props, hilarious
ad-libs and physical theatre and smart backstage choices.
You are all so talented, and I’m forever grateful for having the
opportunity to work with you’.
Lockdowns moved the production online, resulting in a
truly unique play in an historic point in the College’s history,
sincerely judged by Dr Powell as the best College play in his
two decades at JCH.

Surf Coast Half Marathon
In May a number of keen student runners signed up for
the Surf Coast Half Marathon in Torquay. Much to their
delight, Deputy Principal, Margie Welsford, happened to
be in the area and surprised them at the half-way mark,
cheering them on from the sidelines. Here they are after the
race with big smiles and medals to mark the achievement.
