A Stroll through Four Rooms in JCH

Push open the glass doors of our red-brick building
And walk straight into the heart of our home –
Gilt-edged books once held by hands of the past
Reddish-brown Chesterfields and a warm open fire
Welcome students, tutors and guests to pre-dinner drinks
Where you share your latest read; discuss Australian politics
In the dignified yet cosy air of the Senior Common Room.
                               Ready for the Ball

Beyond this lies the lively centre of our college
Never at rest, always bustling with energy –
Devise ingenious angles in billiards, have a spot of table tennis
Watch the college play, swing to the beat at a college party
Relax on the comfy couches, munch on a cupcake for afternoon tea
Cheer your favourite footy team on the big telly
All these and more, happening thick and fast in the JCR.

             On the river
The Verdon Library is our smartest, our prettiest room
There are books to every branch of knowledge you need
Long windows look out to Parkville’s seasonal trees:
In spring, their shimmering leaves inspire you to reflect and study
In summer, the intense green leaves you cool and at peace
Red leaves in fall accompany the reading of wistful autumnal verses
And in winter, the bare branches form intricate patterns of wonder.

Do you hear strains of Chopin, or the harmonious voices of our Choir
Wafting through the long windows of our Dining Hall?
Student President Ivan Lin & Virginia Glenn The aroma of pasta bake, the aftertaste of a vintage Shiraz
Are not the only scents hanging in the air
At Commencement Dinner, ringing benedictions usher in the year
At Valedictory Dinner, hip hip hip hurrahs resound all around
This is a space of aural and gastronomical wonders.

Strolling through the rooms of JCH, echoes from the past and present
Resonate in every stone, every pillar; old photographs, new paintings
May we each take a leaf out of its long and rich history
To remember, to treasure, close to our hearts, for the future.
