A LIFE WELL LIVED
Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September
15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of
American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and
Central and South America.
During the month Hispanic Heritage is celebrated in many ways, with events such as
parades, art exhibitions, concerts and traditional Hispanic food fairs.
September 15 was chosen as the starting point for the commemoration because it is
the anniversary of the independence of five Hispanic countries.
The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President
Johnson and in 1988 was expanded to cover a 30-day period by President Reagan.
