FLEXIBLE SPENDING ACCOUNTS (FSA)
Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA)
Flexible Spending Accounts allow you to pay for out-of-pocket health and dependent
care expenses on a tax-free basis. You may begin making contributions on the 1st of
the month following 30 days of employment. Our FSA is administered by Benefit
Strategies. Please note, if you are enrolled in the HDHP, you are not eligible to enroll
in the Health Care FSA.
How the Health Care FSA Works
The Health Care FSA allows you to pay for eligible IRS-approved medical care expenses not covered by your
insurance plan. Money that you now spend on the following items can be placed in the FSA pretax. The maximum
annual contribution is $3,050.
Deductibles and copayments
Over the counter medications (prescription required)
Prescription drug copayments
Dental, vision and hearing care expenses
How the Dependent Care FSA Works
The Dependent Care FSA allows you to use pre-tax dollars towards the following qualified dependent care. The
maximum annual contribution is $5,000 or $2,500 if married filing separately.
• Preschool or nursery school expenses
• Babysitter in your home
• Day care center
• Summer day camp
• After-school care
• Adult day care center or in-home for an adult dependent
Commuter Benefits
All full-time and part-time employees are eligible to enroll in Commuter Benefits offered through Benefit Strategies.
Before the start of the plan year, employees consider if they want to make an election to set aside up to $300 of their
pre-tax dollars to go into a mass transit expense reimbursement account.
Use it or Lose It:
Consider your expenses carefully before you decide how much to contribute to each FSA account. If your eligible expenses for
the calendar year turn out to be less than the amount contributed to your FSA account, the Nationals allow for medical FSA
participants to rollover up to $610 from their prior years account. Additional funds that rollover do not count against the next year’s
elections. Please see Human Resources for additional details
