The Sanger military banner program will be entering its fourth year with a new crop of banners for 2019.
Banners dedicated to veterans from Sanger or with family living in Sanger are displayed along Academy Avenue, between Annadale Avenue and Church Street.
If more space is needed, banners will also be hung on Jensen Avenue, between Acad- emy and Bethel avenues.
“You get a knot in your throat just by looking at them, just seeing how beautiful,” said Isabel Murillo, member of the Sanger Veteran’s Advisory Committee to the Mayor. The program has featured banners dedicated to Murillo’s brother and son.
The new banners are usually displayed a week before Memorial Day and taken down in November and presented to the veterans or family members.
The program began in 2015 and was cre- ated by the Sanger Veterans Advisory Com- mittee to the Mayor. There were 16 banners in 2015, 24 in 2016, 41 in 2017 and 71 this year.
To qualify for a banner, veterans must live
or have lived in Sanger or have an immediate family member residing in Sanger. An active military ID or a DD – 214, which is military discharge paperwork, must be presented.
The cost for a first time applicant is $275 to cover the cost of the banner. Returning applicants must pay $25 to have their banner displayed again.
The banners are red, white and blue. The top either states “thanks to,” “in honor of” or “in memory of.”
The veteran’s name, rank branch of service and service era are included. Under a picture of the veteran, it states “proudly sponsored by” and names who sponsored the banner.
“A lot of our service members are very humble and they won’t pay to have their own banner put up. But if someone puts it up,
it’s a great honor to them,” said JD Bennett, chairman of the Sanger Veterans Network.
Sanger city manager Tim Chapa said, “We have a good, long history of families in town
- young men and women - who serve, and there’s a lot of pride that the family members have,” said Chapa.
This year there was a banner honoring Chapa's twin brother, Artemio Chapa, a U.S. Air Force Colonel.
In the order in which the veterans were announced by mayor Frank Gonzalez, with the name, rank and conflict area, if any, as it was shown on the banner:
