It was 16 years between tournament championships for the Reedley High boys basketball program. Adding an- other title came much quicker.
Just one week after they captured the Sierra Pacific Tip-Off Classic on Dec. 7, the Pirates (11-1 on the season) wrapped up a 3-0 run through the Lib- erty-Madera Ranchos Boys Tournament by rallying past the host Hawks, 78-69, on Dec. 14.
Reedley trailed 54-50 entering the fourth quarter, but outscored Liberty 28- 15 over the final eight minutes. Marcus Heinrichs scored 12 of his game-high 25 points in the period, and tournament Most Valuable Player Augie Villarreal tallied five of his 20 points while con- necting on 6 of 13 from 3-point range.
“It was definitely a game of runs,” said RHS coach Chris Freeman. “Augie did a great job leading us offensively, just like he always does, but he had some great help from Marcus.”
But Freeman said the biggest impact by a Pirate player in the decisive rally was Leo Hernandez, who joined Vil- larreal on the all-tournament team. He finished with nine points, but converted on three consecutive steals during a run that put the team ahead to stay.
Rounding out Reedley’s scorers was Israel Vildosola with 13 points while Aaron Todd — MVP of the Sierra Pacific tourney — finished with 11 points.
Reedley opened the tournament on Dec. 12 with a 69-61 win over Fire- baugh High. Villarreal scored 13 of his game-high 23 points in the first half and drained four 3-pointers. Vildosola scored 15 points while Heinrichs and Todd each added 10 points. The Pirates then stormed into the finals with a 74- 45 dismantling of Yosemite High. A 23-4 eruption in the third quarter turned an eight-point halftime lead into a 57-30 rout entering the final quarter.
Villarreal scored seven of his team- leading 17 during the third-quarter out- burst. Hernandez hit six of his seven shots from the field and finished with 12 points while Vildosola scored 10 points. Eleven different Reedley play- ers scored.
The Pirates’ final game of 2019 will be at 7 p.m Friday, Dec. 20, on the road against Kingsburg High. It’s a matchup of the top two ranked teams in Division 4 by MaxPreps. The top-rated Vikings took a perfect 9-0 season record into their Central Sequoia League road game at Hanford West High on Dec. 17, and already own a convincing 95-66 win at CSL rival and Division 4 state runner-up Immanuel High.

games,” Woods said. “We had plenty of open shots, but just didn’t make enough. When we can’t score, our defense has a hard time getting back. When we score, we get to go set up our defense.
“It’s just a case of getting the guys to understand both sides of the ball.”
Earlier in the tournament, Rodgers scored 14 points in the rout of Woodlake before he got hurt. Williams erupted for 36 points in the win over Woodlake and added 25 in a 74-69 win over Mission Oak High on Dec. 5. Williams finished with 90 points in four games to make the all-tournament team.
Immanuel posted a 2-2 record at the Mark Gallo Invitational at Central Catholic High School in Modesto on Dec. 11-14. The Eagles lost to Liberty Ranch High from Galt (68-50 on Dec. 11) and
