son’s momentum going in the third quarter after a big run on the Tigers’ opening possession, peel- ing off a big run that took his team inside Sanger territory. A personal foul penalty on the Apaches moved the ball to the 28-yard-line.
But the Sanger de- fense dug deep and made their stance there.
Edison’s drive stalled. The Tigers chose to go for it on 4th and 12, but their quarterback, Ian Miller, was tackled well short of the line to gain and Edi- son turned the ball over on downs.
It was the spark the Apaches needed, as seven plays later Agina punched it in from 14 yards out to pull Sanger to within 11 points with 7:30 left in the third quarter.
The Sanger defense came up big again on the Tigers’ ensuing posses- sion, as Apache senior defensive lineman Jason Lopez recovered a fum- ble in Edison’s backfield after a poor quarterback exchange.
“I think our defensive coaches made some great adjustments,” shared Pe- na. “We put more pres- sure on the quarterback and that made a big dif- ference.”
It wouldn't take long for the Apaches to capital- ize again, as this time Agi- na pulled off his hat trick for the night, scoring his
third rushing touchdown from 27 yards out. The point after by Romero pulled the Apaches to within four points, 28-24 with just over three min- utes left in the quarter.
Including his 34-yard field goal on Friday, Romero went 5-for-5 on point after tries, making it 30 in a row for the sopho- more kicker.
With the momentum having clearly shifted to the Apaches, Sanger’s 12th man began to play a bigger role in the game as the crowd, though small- er than normal, began to increase the decibels at Tom Flores Stadium.
Amidst the roar of the crowd, Sanger’s defense stepped up again, forcing Edison to punt on their next possession after sacking Miller on third- and-long. Miller would be sacked four times in Fri- day night’s contest.
Sanger then took the lead on the first play of scrimmage in the fourth quarter on a 14-yard run by junior running back Morgan Privett. Agina’s 39-yard touchdown re- ception later in the quar- ter sealed the deal for the Apaches.
“I’m just so proud of these guys,” Pena added. “I’ve never been so proud of these guys.”
The game was cer- tainly a battle for the Apaches. Sanger put up 371 total yards, with 270 of those coming on the ground. Edison compiled 361 total yards, with the

Sanger High's Morgan Privett carried the ball 11 times for 75 yards during the Apaches' 38-28 come-from-behind victory over visiting Edison High. His biggest carry of the game, however, came on the first play of the fourth quarter when he ran the ball 14 yards for the go-ahead score.
majority of those yards (255) coming from their passing game.
The victory sets up a league title match tomor- row night when Sanger hosts San Joaquin Memo- rial. The Panthers, cur- rently the No. 2 ranked team in Division II, bring an 8-1 overall record into tomorrow night’s match- up. They are also current- ly undefeated in CMAC play.
Sanger, who is current- ly the No. 4 ranked team in Division II, is now 7-2
overall and 3-1 in league. A win by the Panthers would give them the out- right league title. A win by the Apaches would give both teams identi- cal records and result in a shared title between to
the two schools. “They’re a hot team
coming in,” said Pena. “They have a really good defense, so we really have our work cut out for us. Hopefully we can carry some of that magic (from beating Edison) into this game.”
San Joaquin Memo- rial’s lone loss of the season came early in the season to Kingsburg, the No. 1 ranked team in Di- vision III. Sanger’s losses came to Hanford, the No. 1 ranked team in Divi- sion II, also early in the season, and Bullard, who is the No. 4 ranked in Di- vision I.
Bullard, though they do not control their own destiny, also has a path to a shared title. They will take on Edison tomorrow night in a rivalry game at
Ratcliffe Stadium in Fres- no. Should the Knights and the Apaches (who currently have identical records) both win tomor- row night, a three-way tie would be created at the top of the CMAC for a three-way split of the title.
Tomorrow night’s home matchup between Sanger and San Joaquin Memorial begins at 7:30 p.m.
Said Pena, “It’s going to be an awesome envi- ronment. It’s going to feel like a playoff game.”
