Special to the Times
Make it a three-game winning streak for the 2019 Reedley College football Tigers. Reedley improved to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in Golden Coast Conference action with a 61- 13 victory over the San Jose City College Jaguars last Saturday in San Jose.
Next up for head coach Eric Marty’s Tigers will be a 1 pm Saturday matchup at Reedley High School’s Sal Gonzalez Field against the Merced College Blue Devils. Merced brings a conference record of 1-2 and an overall mark of 3-4 after last Satur- day’s 22-19 loss at home to the Hartnell Col- lege Panthers. All but one of the Blue Devil’s losses have been by six points or less.
It was the second highest single-game point total for the 2019 Tigers, who are now averaging 46.4 points per game.
Reedley scored at least 12 points in each quarter, including 23 points in the second Aas the Tigers opened up a 36-13 halftime lead. In the second half, Reedley outscored the winless Jaguars 25-0. The 61 points was the highest point total allowed this season by San Jose. The previous high was 42 points, scored by Hartnell on Oct. 19.
Daniel Baca, Jamon Chambers and Derrik Mays all scored two touchdowns for Reedley. Starting quarterback Drew’s Zaubi completed 18 of 21 passes for 277 yards and four touchdowns. Peyton May- er took over in the fourth quarter up and
threw for two touchdowns, completing six of nine for 99 yards. Chambers finished the afternoon, averaging 11.9 yards per carry with 95 yards and eight attempts. Nine different tigers carried a ball and nine different tigers caught passes.
The Tigers opened the scoring on a 22-yard touchdown pass from Zaubi to Ba- ca. Chambers made it 13-0 with a 74-yard run for a touchdown. The two had touch- down runs in the second quarter while Jorge Rosales kicked a 30-yard field goal. With six seconds left in the first half, Zaubi threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Mays.
Zaubi threw two touchdown passes of 58 yards each to Elijah Hawkins and Andy Pierre-Antoine in the third quarter. Mayer connected with Mays for an 8-yard scoring pass before concluding the scoring on an 18-yard pass to River Walker.
Reedley was able to put 61 points on the board despite finishing the afternoon with six turnovers. The Tigers lost three fumbles and the quarterbacks combined to throw three interceptions.
“Our team did a great job of going on the road with poise and focus,” said Tiger head coach Eric Marty. “SJCC did a nice job keeping us off balance defensively in the first half, but it’s great to see the way our staff and players responded to the challenge at halftime. Offensively, we were efficient all day sans turnovers and it’s great to see us continue to improve on that side of the wall.”

Reedley rallies past Sunnyside for third straight NYL volleyball title

A third consecutive outright North Yosemite League volleyball champi- onship appeared to be slip- ping away — more like be- ing torn from the grasp — of the Reedley High girls.
The visiting Sunnyside High Wildcats twice roared from behind to steal sets from the stunned hosts at RHS gym on Oct. 24, then jumped to 6-1 and 16-11 leads in set three. But the Pirates picked themselves off the floor, cleaned up the unforced errors and wore down the visitors defen- sively to prevail 23-25, 22- 25, 25-20, 25-21 and 15-9.
A block from senior cap- tain Madison Haney capped off the stirring comeback and sent the Reedley root- ers into a delirious celebra- tion. In the decisive fifth set, the hosts took command with a five-point run fueled by the serving of Vanessa Rodriguez, and closed out the victory behind the serv- ing of senior libero Lauren Betancourt.
“Amazing. I thought we were dead, I really did,” RHS coach Ken Tatami said after the match. “But you find that spark, and a little bit builds. Once that starts happening, it just starts to steamroll. It’s the same thing like last time we played Sunnyside. It’s just a war.”
The Wildcats, who couldn’t close out a 2-1 sets lead in a first-round home loss to RHS, were deter- mined to finish things off quicker in the rematch. Fueled by the hitting from Megan Hernandez and Chytiera Jones along with strong serving from Jones and Xue Yang, the visitors rallied from five points down late to pull out the first set before pulling away in set two. But strong defensive play from Lexie Canales (17 digs), Sophia Lampa (19 digs), Rylee Kubo (nine digs) and

Reedley High players celebrated after match point in a five-set victory over Sunnyside High on Oct. 24 at RHS gym. The comeback victory capped off a third consecu- tive 10-0 North Yosemite League season for the Pirates.
Bronagh McGahan (nine digs) helped Reedley turn the match around.
“Oh my gosh, they were tough. We had to survive it, it was really tough,” Tatami said of the Sunnyside on- slaught. “But our girls re- ally work hard. The work that we spend on defense, it really pays off. We don’t mess a lot of teams up of- fensively, but defensively we keep at it. That’s the whole idea is to kind of wear them out.”
McGahan had a pivotal serving run to shift the momentum in set three, collecting three of her six aces in that span. The of- fense then came alive be- hind Canales (who finished with 12 kills), Lillian Marti- nez (nine kills, two blocks) and Haney (seven kills, four blocks). Kubo ran the offense with 30 assists, and as the match wore on Reedley’s methodical play caused Sunnyside to com- mit a number of unforced errors.
Earlier in the week, the Pirates rebounded from a first set loss to defeat Hoover 18-25, 25-18, 25- 12, 25-20 in Fresno on Oct. 22. Canales collected 16 kills, 10 digs and three ace serves while Martinez add- ed seven kills and Haney
six kills. Kybo finished with 41 assists and 14 digs. Reedley (24-13 overall) was seeded ninth in the Central Section Division III bracket, and will open the playoffs on the road against eighth-seeds Arvin on Thursday, Oct. 31. If the Pirates pull out the victory, they would likely play top seed San Joaquin Memo- rial on Tuesday, Nov. 5 in
Fresno. •••
Immanuel High (22-10, 5-7 East Sequoia League) drew the number three seed in Division III, earn- ing a 7 p.m. home match Thursday, Oct. 31, against 14th-seeded Chavez High from Delano. The Eagles are bracketed against the winner of the NIpomo- Morro Bay match, and would host with a first round win.
Immanuel closed out the league season with a 25-15, 25-16, 25-11 sweep of Hanford West High on Oct. 22. Captain MacKen- zie Coats, one of nine se- niors honored by the team that night, collected 10 kills and 15 digs in the sweep. Senior Sarah Jane Clothier had eight kills while senior Olivia Barsoom and junior Brooke Hatch each had 11 assists.
